Computer Science – choicest subject once again

There was a time when lots of subjects in the discipline of engineering viz. Computer, Electronics, Electrical, Metallurgical, Mechanical, Production and even Civil had special significance among the young aspirants. Well, not only these but the subject of Computer Science also had a special admiration among young generation. But it was the dot com boom along with an overwhelming increase in the finance market that sealed the fate of others.

Well, it seems that old days have returned yet again on account of the existent slump and dismal performance of the worldwide financial scenario. According to a new study from the Computing Research Association, for the first time in six years there is an increase in student enrollment in the discipline of Computer Science. On the word of experts, the banking crisis has wiped the glamour off of finance careers and hence Computer Science has regained its glory. The study reveals also that throughout the United States of America Computer Science enrollment rose 6.2 percent over last year, counting majors and pre-majors.

On the other hand, as indicated by the study report, the average number of new students majoring in computer science is up 9.5 percent. Moreover, a high rate of students adhering to Computer Science can be found among both freshman and sophomore. All these indicate that the time is changing once again. How does this account fare if we compare it with earlier years? The number of graduating computer science majors last year fell 10 percent, after a 20 percent decline the previous year. In consequence, the class of 2008 represented the smallest graduating computer science class in 10 years.

As stated by Peter Harsha, Director of Government Affairs at the Washington, D.C.-based Computing Research Association, the change is significant and is going to create a far-reaching impact on both technology industry and U.S. economy. Speaking on this, he said, computer science “is the discipline that has led the innovations in industry over the years.” Most of the increases in worker productivity between 1995 and 2000 can be attributed to information technology, he added.
