There is a new US President, a new administration, new policy to combat a new and bizarre crisis like downturn. When all these are new how can key organizations remain unchanged? Keep in mind that the presence of a lack of coordination between noteworthy players in any job affects badly. This may be the viewpoint of US administration as well and for that reason FDA is being overhauled.

The erstwhile New York City Health Commissioner Margaret Hamburg, MD has been nominated as Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration by President Obama while Joshua Sharfstein, MD, the Health Commissioner for Baltimore has been selected as the Principal Deputy Commissioner. It was during the President’s weekly radio address on March 14 when the announcement was made. It is to be noted that Obama stated openly (through speech) that the government’s failure to inspect 95 percent of the food processing plants and warehouses is “a hazard to public health.”

The US President said, “It is unacceptable.” “And it will change under the leadership of Dr. Margaret Hamburg. From her research on infectious disease at the National Institutes of Health to her work on public health at the Department of Health and Human Services to her leadership on biodefense at the Nuclear Threat Initiative, Dr. Hamburg brings to this vital position not only a reputation of integrity but a record of achievement in making Americans safer and more secure.”

This is not all since the government is going to adopt several other apposite measures as well. According to the President, there will be the creation of a Food Safety Working Group and it will be chaired by the secretaries of Health and Human Services and the Department of Agriculture. What will be the main job responsibility of this group? It will coordinate with other agencies and senior officials to advise President Obama on developing coordination all through the government, examining and upgrading food safety laws, and enforcing laws that will keep Americans safe.

In addition the President made the announcement of two other food safety measures.
