Ram Gopal Verma toys with National Anthem - affronts Indian nationalism

Is Ram Gopal Verma or RGV – Bollywood-famed director and controversy becoming synonymous? It seems so although it’s not known yet whether this is an emphatic creation of RGV himself. But it must be stated that the current and raging controversy may get more complicated bit by bit. After all, he has toyed with the national anthem and this is no trifling crime. The controversial song depicts the Indian National Anthem in his recently launched song promo of Rann, the lyrics ‘Jana Gana Mana Rann’ and has not only infuriated the censors but the political class as well. Nevertheless Ram Gopal Verma is still upbeat and fighting a lone (losing?) battle.

There is no doubt that Ram Gopal Verma belongs to a different brand of directors whose movies deal with no nonsense subjects. He was also the director of “Sarkar” that brought to the fore family-based crimes and according to many, it was the Indian version of “Godfather.” Whatever it is, he is feeling the brunt of the situation and the offense, without a doubt, is grave. What will be the consequence is not known yet but people are wondering who may be the knight in shining armor.

Will the lyricist of ‘Jana Gana Mana Rann’, Sarim Momin come to the rescue of RGV and his Rann? It is uncertain thus far but he will also undergo a hard-hitting time. As per reigning gossips, the song has been introduced in order to exemplify the movie’s intrinsic message. But, even after that, there are only few takers of this theory. Sarim Momin has already stated, “Now, if we had used lines like “Jaag jao… Bharat ko bachaao’ or ‘Humari jaan Hindustan’, maximum reaction would have been a yawn or a raise of an eyebrow. Or both, if somebody really liked it and were generous. ……It would NOT have made people sit up and think about the current state.”

What do you think? Can this justification be accepted ever? It’s true that State often acts devilishly and tries to mar its harsh criticisms. This mephistophelean trend is quite common in India and we have already witnessed its ugliest manifestations at several times. The intellectuals cutting across political ideals have also protested.

But RGV has assaulted the core of Indian nationalism – the National Anthem now and he will have to have the brunt. There is no other choice. Lastly, entertainment is not only to amuse but also to make people conscious. Is ‘Jana Gana Mana Rann’ trying to make people consider Indian nationalism as a fallacy?

Then, it’s nothing but – TREASON.
