Swine flu in US attaining a more precarious form
There was a great fear in the air and now it has become true. United States of America has witnessed two swine flu deaths and according to a recently released report, each of the two suffered from a number of other illnesses when they were infected with the virus. It is to be noted that the two hapless persons were a toddler and a pregnant woman. The report was brought to the fore by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and made it clear that the complicated medical situations faced by those who have gotten swine flu and had the most serious cases up to now.
What did happen with the toddler in reality? Well, the Mexican toddler had been found to have a chronic muscle weakness called myasthenia gravis, a heart defect, a swallowing problem and lack of oxygen. The name of the toddler was Miguel Tejada Vazquez who fell ill and died during a family visit to Texas. On the other hand the pregnant woman, Judy Trunnell, 33, was hospitalized for two weeks until she died Tuesday. The teacher was in a coma, and her baby girl was delivered by cesarean section. In accordance with the report, Judy Trunnell was suffering from multiple diseases including asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, a skin condition called psoriasis and was 35 weeks pregnant.
It should be noted that the report has conveyed a perilous fact. People suffering from chronic illnesses are at greatest risk for severe illness from the flu, in conjunction with the elderly and young children. Keep in mind that the majority of persons affected with swine flu in the U.S. and Mexico have been young adults. “We’re still learning about what patients are most at risk” from the new virus, said Dr. Fatima Dawood, a CDC epidemiologist.
As stated by New England Journal of Medicine, responsible for releasing CDC report, 22 people were hospitalized with swine flu. Nine had chronic medical conditions, including the two who died and a 25-year-old man with Down syndrome and a congenital heart disease. Five of the patients had asthma alone.
We have one modest question, lastly. Shall we await God’s intervention to curb the disease? It’s true that reliance on US health care system is dropping sharply.
