We are in search of antidote of swine flu

The global swine flu is unabated and more and more deaths are occurring with the passing of almost each day and all these indicate that the situation is becoming more shockingly repellent. The recent reports of death have come from both USA and Mexico. While there were four fatalities in Mexico, there was one death in the realm of United States of America. It is to be noted that these are the two countries where the first outbreaks were reported and by now the total number of deaths is 100, if not more.

The situation can be termed as appalling and the World Health Organization, before the latest North American deaths, had annunciated that the global toll was at 95. What is the number of affected persons then? According to the latest statistics, 13,398 people in 48 countries have been infected with the A(H1N1) virus since it was first uncovered last month. Speaking on this the Ministry of Health, Mexico stated, Mexico’s four fatalities increased the toll to 89 with 100 new infections, bringing the total to 4,821. Though the US is far behind to Mexico, the second swine flu death reported by officials in Chicago, largest city in the state of Illinois; midwestern state in north-central United States, did increase the US toll to 15.

Is there any new development? Well, the WHO had assumed that after Asia there would not be any further development. Nevertheless, this assumption doesn’t exist any more since two more countries — the Dominican Republic, in the Caribbean, and South America’s Uruguay have witnessed the outbreak of swine fu. Each of the two countries has reported the first two confirmed cases of swine flu, raising the number of countries with cases to 50.

World Health Organization (WHO), for the moment, seems to be helpless and this becomes evident from the recent statement of WHO interim Assistant Director General Keiji Fukuda. “I think it’s quite possible that it will continue to spread and it will establish itself in many other countries in multiple regions, at which time I think it would be fair to call it a pandemic at that point,” Fukuda said.
