A mobile phone or cell phone is a long-range, electronic device used for mobile telecommunications over a cellular network of specialized base stations known as cell sites. As opposed to a radio telephone, a cell phone proffers complete duplex communication, automatised calling to and paging from a public land mobile network (PLMN), and handoff (handover) during a phone call when the user moves from one cell (base station coverage area) to another. Well, this is the basic definition of cell phone and is known to almost all of us. But perhaps almost one per cent of them know that excessive use of cell phone is perilous and can have a drastic effect upon human body.

Is this info stunning to you too? Well, a team of eminent Swedish researchers have found through a recent study that application of cell phone actuates a specific biological effect in the brain. Nevertheless, researchers at Sweden’s Orebro University, who conducted the study, was not able to decide if the above effect is good, bad, or indifferent. To cut a long story short, they did find a relationship between cell phone use and an increased amount of a protein called Transthyretin in the blood. It is to be noted that Transthyretin remains connected with the fluid that does protect the brain.

On the word of lead researcher Fredrik Soderqvist, even though an increase in transthyretin may not be any cause for concern, it does indicate that cell phone use does have some biological effect on the brain. What is more, the study also made out that children and teenagers, traditionally greater users of cell phones, were more likely to report health problems, including headaches and impaired concentration. Is there any such cause-and-effect relationship? Fredrik Soderqvist declined to make any comment in this regard.

“The connection was strongest regarding headaches, asthmatic complaints, and impaired concentration. But more research is needed to exclude the effects of other factors and sources of error, even though it is difficult to see how this connection could be fully explained by such factors,” Live Science quoted him as saying.
