Darwin rocks still; India commemorates

It may be you are in defiance of his perspective, ways of looking at things and certainly ideals, what is more you may have left no stone unturned to prove him wrong, yet you, simply, can’t deny him. He is Charles Darwin, internationally renowned English naturalist who realized that all species of life have evolved over time from common ancestors, and published compelling evidence to that effect. Even after 150 years since Charles Darwin’s “On the Origin of Species” was published, he continues to exert a profound influence on mankind. Whether through defying or revering his theories, Charles Darwin is irrefutable.

Now it’s the time for India, country that has remained relatively away from the excitement of knowing Darwin, to commemorate the English naturalist. It will be done through the exhibition of slides of the life and works of the English naturalist through an exhibition “Darwin Now”. It will be done under the auspices of the British Council. It is to be noted that the exhibition has been traveling more or less the world eliciting interest in how and why the son of a prosperous English country doctor, who deserted medical school and was sent to prepare for life as a vicar, became a naturalist.

Speaking on this, Chitra Shriram, Manager of BC’s Young Audience wing, stated the exhibition explores the origins of Darwin’s book, outlines his central ideas and explains how those ideas are as important to all these days as they were when they were first published. On the other hand one enthusiast can also come across little known facts about the naturalist.

“We are showing how Darwin’s theories are relevant today. The Madras Naturalists Society will be presenting a show on the biodiversity of Chennai and hold interactive sessions on related issues like why the only birds one can see in Chennai are crows,” says Chitra.

The presentation, organized to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his book, is on till November 28 at the BC library.
