Green tea – highly beneficial for eyes

Green tea is exceedingly beneficial and a few medical conditions in which drinking green tea is reputed to be helpful includes cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, high cholesterol levels, cariovascular disease, infection, impaired immune function. Well, drinking green tea does play a great role in preventing tooth decay too. While on one hand its bacteria-destroying abilities can help put a stop to food poisoning, it can also kill the bacteria that bring about dental plaque.

Whatever it is, in accordance with a newly concluded study, drinking green tea is beneficial for eyes too and does play a great role in thwarting common eye diseases like glaucoma. The study report has been published in the current issue of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry and the concerned researchers did find that catechins are absorbed by the lens, retina and other parts of the eye and lessen oxidative stress in the eye. It is to be noted that that catechins found in green tea are acknowledged antioxidants which are believed to put off damage caused by oxidation.

However, this happens to be an animal model study and as a part of it the authors provided green tea to rats and then did examine their eyes to perceive if catechins had any effort on their eyes. The study was conducted under Chi Pui Pang and colleagues from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the team did found the green tea compounds did diminish oxidative stress in the eye for up to 20 hours.
