Prince Charles suggests ban on McDonalds
ABU DHABI: Britain's Prince Charles has advocated a ban on fast food chain McDonalds. Attending the launch of a public awareness campaign in the fight against diabetes in the United Arab Emirates, the prince, a staunch advocate of healthy food habits, told a nutritionist banning the chain was "key."
McDonalds reacted to the suggestion saying it was "disappointed." A spokesperson said the prince was unaware of the company's efforts, which included improved labeling and supporting sustainable agriculture. She added that it appears to be an off-the-cuff remark. It does not reflect the food chain's menu or where it is as a business.
The UAE, according to health experts, has the second highest prevalence of diabetes in the world.
Charles, during a conversation with the nutritionist, identified as Nadine Tayara, asked, "Have you got anywhere with McDonald's, have you tried getting it banned? That's the key."
A Clarence House spokesperson in London said the prince has "for a long time advocated the importance of a balanced diet, especially for children."
An advocate of organic food, he had set up a farm on his Highgrove Estate that does not use artificial pesticides or fertilizers.
