Bladder Cancer: The next big ailment
There is some good news for patients suffering from bladder cancer all over the world. By studying the level of enzyme Telomerase in urine, it would be possible to detect bladder cancer. This has been claimed by the Italian researchers who have conducted extensive research.
People who smoke should be extremely careful as they are heavily prone to bladder cancer. Smoking in itself is extremely injurious to health. A survey conducted states that bladder cancer is the fourth major disease affecting the men and the tenth among women.
Cancer in itself is a life threatening disease. The instances of bladder cancer are increasing all over the world with more than 10,700 cases being reported every year. An alarming 4,900 deaths are caused due to bladder cancer every year. If the disease is detected early and proper medication is undertaken, the chances of surviving are very good. But it is very difficult to detect any kind of cancer at an early stage.
In Forli Italy, a study was conducted on 218 men by the Morgagni-Pierantoni hospital. It revealed some interesting facts. Of the 218 men, 134 were diagnosed with bladder cancer. The men's urine samples were tested for studying the levels of the enzyme Telomerase. This enzyme is exclusively found in all the cancer cells but hardly seen in non-cancerous cells.
Tissue culture tests were conducted to ascertain the presence of bladder cancer. The urinary tract was examined. The presence of cancer cells in urine is determined by the process of urine cytology. The enzyme test proved to be highly successful in those people who had cancer.
The enzyme tests conducted were extremely cost effective in nature and required a very small amount of urine. The procedure required to perform the test is quite simple. This test is quite useful in treating those who are in the high risk groups. Smokers have a very high risk of contracting bladder cancer and the enzyme test could prove to be a boon for them.
According to the American Medical Association, a good 60,000 Americans are affected by bladder cancer every year of which 20 percent die every year. The patients all over could undertake these tests for early detection.
One should never ignore the early symptoms which includes the presence of blood in the urine. But people in general are never serious until the disease aggravates to enormous proportions. It is good to lead a healthy lifestyle and completely avoid smoking. As the golden saying says “Prevention is better than cure”.
