Liars have different brains!!

For long it was believed that habitual liars had something extra which made them think and act differently from normal men and women. But no one knew what that extra bit was. Now at least we have a clue because it has been revealed recently that those who lie and cheat frequently possess a brain that is structurally quite different from that possessed by their more truthful counterparts.

Researchers who conducted a study in the University of Southern California have proposed this new theory. Their findings, the first of its kind, were subsequently published in the October issue of the British Journal of Psychiatry and the world came to know about it.

These researchers say that they have found structural differences in those parts of the brain (prefrontal cortex) that control intense thinking of these people. This portion located just behind the forehead contains less grey matter and more white matter for those regularly lie, also known as pathological liars.

Grey matter comprises the cells that actually do the thinking process while white matter includes the cells that link them and it is these linkages that help people in complex and strategic thinking that is involved in the entire lying process. Moreover, lying is definitely tougher than telling the truth and therefore explains the fact that their verbal skills are better than the rest.

The researchers between 108 people conducted a survey and it revealed that the liars had a staggering 25.7 % more white matter when compared to the anti socials and 22 % more than normal honest people. Also they possessed 14.2 % less grey matter than the normal ones. Adrian Raine, a professor of psychology at the University of Southern California (USC) says, “The reduction in gray matter predisposes them to lie in the first place.

The excess of white matter makes it easier for them to do it. If these liars have a 14 percent reduction in gray matter, that means they are less likely to care about moral issues or are less likely to be able to process moral issues."
Yes, liars are indeed special people. Moreover, they also have a biological edge.
