Samsung to start mass production of 64GB flash drives
Leading electronics and semiconductor manufacturer, Samsung Electronics revealed that it has started the mass production of its flash memory-based 1.8-inch solid state drives (SSD).
The drives have a capacity of 64GB, making it the highest density drives available in the market for mobile computing applications. Samsung promises the new drives to have faster boot times, faster application start-up times and greater reliability than the normal hard disk drives currently in use.
The company also said that using SSDs in notebooks will improve the battery life by as much as 20 percent. The Samsung SSDs carry sixty four 8GB single-level cell flash memory chips and uses the 51nm process technology to fabricate the components.
The company expects the usage of SSD units by more than 270 percent in the next 3 years, making it the fastest growing product in the NAND flash industry. Samsung is yet to reveal the retail price of the SSDs.
Says Jim Elliott, director, flash marketing, Samsung Semiconductor, "We see sharply increasing interest in SSDs among OEMs worldwide amid a growing push to launch premium SSD-based notebooks, particularly in the ultra-mobile category."
