The American scientific fraternity is conducting deep rooted research to ascertain whether the traditional evolution theory still holds good. Conflicting views and opinions are flying like brickbats with top scientists entering the fray.

Plenty of experiments are being conducted to study the evolution process systematically. There are essentially two schools of thought. One school clearly wants to redefine the evolution theory itself. The other view too clearly denounces the natural evolution theory, while laying a lot of stress on faith and religion.

Darwin laid a lot of emphasis on natural selection and survival of the fittest. He stated with conviction that the process of evolution was greatly influenced by those creatures who could adapt to the natural surroundings and those who could withstand the fury of nature. Modern scientists have always relied on tools like testing and reasoning. They feel that the facts are not available to test the theory of evolution and hence it becomes very difficult to arrive at a conclusion. Hence, some researchers are of the opinion that these are merely theories.

A raging debate continues over whether these new observations should be taught to the science students at the schools. The schools have always been teaching the traditional theory of Darwin. Modern educationists have emphasized the need to incorporate some views that challenge the traditional theory. The Seattle based Discovery institute has called the new bunch of views on evolution as “Intelligent Design”. They argue that the process of evolution cannot be the work of nature alone and it ought to have the hand of a designer. The designer here could mean a “Superior Power” or Divine intervention. The hand of God is a view which most Americans like to believe. The majority of the Americans believe that God created Human beings. Many also believe that the human evolution has taken billions of years and has successfully evolved only due to the grace of God. Recent surveys reveal that a majority of Americans want these new concepts to be included in the science syllabus.

The American society has always been plagued with constant debates over the theory of evolution. With this issue again taking centre stage this may be the beginning of a new cultural change.
