Intel announces the arrival of Super chip
The world's largest computer chip maker Intel is facing some serious quality issues. These have prompted Intel to delay the much awaited next version of the Itanium chip. The production of the new chip is expected to begin only during mid 2006. The Itanium chip is used exclusively in high end servers.
The code of the new chip is called Montecito. Intel plans to begin the production on a mass scale. Although the specifications of the new chip are not available, Intel is quite confident that the new chip would be in great demand in the market.
They seem to have sorted their quality issues. The previous version of the Itanium chip, which is used in high end computers, did not live up to its expectations. The sales too were not up to the mark. But, Intel is displaying a lot of confidence regarding the performance of the new Itanium chip. Intel has drawn some huge and ambitious plans to introduce the next generation of chips.
Caneland, a collection of chipsets and processors is all set to replace the Reidland platform. Caneland would essentially be a Xeon MP platform. Initially, the Whitefield processor was expected to be used for the Reidland platform. But the Whitefield processor would now be replaced by Tigerton, the name of the code for the new processor. Caneland would essentially be a high performance delivering platform.
Intel is facing a lot of competition from Advanced Micro Devices. The server processors of Advanced Micro Devices stimulate efficient communication between chips. The chips produced by Advanced Micro Devices have excelled as compared to the chips produced by Intel.
Therefore, the pressure is definitely on Intel to perform. Moreover, the market shares of AMDs servers have grown considerably. Hewlett-Packard has also entered the fray in the production of Itanium chips.
Intel claimed that thousands of the new Itanium chip with Montecito platform have already been sent to customers for testing. The platform for the current Itanium chip is called Madison. There are a lot of expectations from Montecito and Intel is quite confident that Montecito would live up to its name.
