The technology industry is all geared up to deliver full mobility through the latest broadband wireless technology.

WiMAX or Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access is a standards-based wireless technology that provides high-speed broadband connections over long distances.

Intel and Motorola will join forces to not only improve WiMAX standards but also test inter-operability of devices and networks and provide recommendations for the implementation of mobile WiMAX. The joint endeavors of the companies will be based on the proposed IEEE 802.16e standard.

The 802.16e standard which is expected to be ratified soon, addresses both fixed and wireless broadband applications due to its robust specifications and ability to support high value services like voice over IP and mobility.

Due to its unique features WiMAX technology will find wide applicability. Most wireless telecommunication equipment manufacturers and consumer device manufacturers have already started manufacturing WiMAX compatible devices like phones, multimedia players and laptops. Technology titans are very positive about the emerging WiMAX technology that holds a promise of full mobility. Scott Richardson, General Manager, Broadband Wireless Division, Intel, expressed his optimism, "WiMAX is beginning to deliver on its promise to provide broadband wireless access to businesses and consumers, and the promise of full mobility is around the corner with the anticipated ratification of the 802.16e standard". In collaboration with Intel, Motorola will deliver MOTOwi4, its portfolio of broadband solutions to meet the needs of wireless, wireline and cable operators.

According to Intel and Motorola, their joint efforts will be within the WiMAX forum of which the two companies are members. WiMAX forum is an industry-led non-profit corporation formed to promote and certify the compatibility and interoperability of broadband wireless products.
