Movies move on to cell phones in 'Cellflix'

Today's media has shifted its focus away from the broadsheets and big screens to something much smaller- the mobile phones. Today's media has shifted its focus away from the broadsheets and big screens to something much smaller- the mobile phones.

Taking this into account, Ithaca College's Roy H. Park School of Communications is sponsoring “Cellflix”, a film festival for high school and college students, where movies should be shot on a cell phone on any subject they choose. The length of the movie is to be 30 seconds. The winner will walk away with a prize of $5,000.

Dianne Lynch, dean of the Park School said: “Less really is more. How do we grab our viewers' attention, communicate an idea or message, produce compelling images, and tell great stories-all in 20 or 30 seconds? It can be done. And high school and college students are the ones who are going to teach the rest of us how to do it.”

This movie should have a theme, a narrative and sound effects. Editing can be done digitally or otherwise.

As technical quality might vary with the type of cell phone used, all submissions in this contest will be judged in basic VGA to ensure a level-playing field, says Lynch.

According to Roger Entner from a Boston-based technology consulting firm, about 130 million Americans have cell phones with cameras and about half of those camera phones can be used to shoot videos.

According to a Gartner report, by 2008, around 20 percent of cell phones will be “smart phones”, i.e. they will be incorporated with additional features like video cameras.

A study by the Pew/Internet & American Life Project in July found that “Youth are leading the transition to a fully wired and mobile nation.” As per the study, 45 percent of the U.S. teens surveyed owned cell phone. It also reports that for American teenagers, “the internet and cell phones have become a central force that fuels the rhythm of daily life.”
