Microsoft helps bust phishing operation

The National Services to Combat Organized Crime (NSCOC), the crime fighting agency of Bulgaria has arrested eight phishers on the basis of a lead provided by Microsoft Corp.

The NSCOS carried out raids in three cities of Bulgaria and busted an international gang of cyber criminals who were involved in data pilferage and financial embezzlement. The phishers allegedly sent out sham emails making them look like they had been sent by MSN, Microsoft's web-based service.

The emails duped the victims into divulging their account information like personal identification numbers and passwords by directing them to a site that resembled an MSN site. The fake website reportedly asked the victims to update their financial information. The swindlers misappropriated at least $50,000 by using the stolen data for buying stuff and making money transfers.

Investigators at Microsoft got clues about the phishers whom they called Microsoft Billing Account Management (MBAM) gang and gave a lead to the Bulgarian authorities. The NSCOC then investigated the matter further and captured eight members of the gang.

“We are pleased to have collaborated with the Bulgarian authorities in their swift and effective action in this case,” said Mr. Horacio Gutierrez, Microsoft Europe's Associate General Counsel happy with the accomplishment. “This is an important step forward in the combat against those who prey on Internet users.

Microsoft believes vigorous criminal enforcement against phishers is essential to show cyber criminals that there are consequences to their illegal actions, and we are pleased to collaborate with law enforcement agencies around the world in this effort.” Microsoft carries out investigations to expose criminals in its effort to contain cyber crime.

It is believed that the eight phishers arrested are a part of large phishing ring which has reportedly generated scores of web pages by copying the design and insignia of the MSN website.
