Sony Ericsson launches the P990 at Symbian Smartphone show

LONDON - Sony Ericsson has added a new member to its range of smartphones by introducing the Symbian 9.1 based P990 at the Symbian Smartphone show in London today. In a bizarre incident, a journalist who was present at the show managed to steal the P990, but was detained at the last minute by the food counter staff who had left the phone lying there.

The Symbian 9.1 is the latest of the smartphone operating systems. This supports the 3G and 802.11b formats allowing users to access high-speed Internet on the move. This model is a good sequel to the other models in this series namely the P800, P900 and P910. The Wi-Fi enabled P990 is equipped with a high-resolution colour screen and a two-megapixel resolution camera. The phone weighs 155 grams and has a hardware keyboard integrated into the body of the phone.

It also offers Bluetooth connectivity in addition a media player that supports a wide range of multimedia files. The P990 also offers Java API support. Besides the Symbian platform, the P990 also has the UIQ Version 3 open software platform. "UIQ is the user interface layer on top of the Symbian OS for the P990. When it came to incorporating a Web browser, Sony Ericsson asked us to deliver Opera as part of UIQ 3," said Christen Krogh, COO of Opera Software.

On the occasion of the launch, Jan Wareby, executive vice president and head of sales and marketing at Sony Ericsson issued a statement saying, "Our smart phones have been recognized as the most advanced and useful on the market, and we want to maintain this reputation with the P990 by ensuring there's a rich supply of top applications for enterprise, productivity, leisure and gaming."
