Sony releases software update 2.50 for the PSP

The recent Trojan attack on the Play Station Portable must have been on top of the concerns at Sony as it released yet another firmware taking it up to version 2.50.

This firmware has support for copywrite-protected videos, wireless video via Sony's LocationFree system as well as any minor web browser updates. The brand new LocationFree Player that has been incorporated into the firmware 2.50 allows users to watch TV and movies on the Internet as well as wirelessly.

This feature works with Sony's LocationFree Base Station hardware. Another feature that has been added on the firmware is the function that allows users to set the time on the console directly from the Internet.

This software upgrade seems minor when compared with the 2.00 version that was released around two months ago. That version incorporated the ability to browse the web. PlayStation Portable users were also given the option of setting desktop wallpapers and sharing photographs wirelessly on the console.

Actually this version had a minor flaw in that it enabled the less scrupulous users to downgrade to version 1.5 and allowed them to operate on home-made software, emulators and play pirated games instead of having to buy their own ones.

In response to this hack, Sony had released version 2.01, which plugged this loophole, but did not offer any other features to the users. The new version is already available for Japanese and North American PSP users and will be shortly available to European users as well, the company said.
