This could be heralded as an ultimate revolution in low cost personal computers. HCL and Advanced Micro Devices have come together to sell personal computers at an amazing low price. The cost of the personal computer would go on sale at less than $235 in India.

The personal computer is likely to hit the markets in the first quarter of 2006-2007. The personal computer would be Linux based. Experts believe that other charges like freight, handling, insurance and installation could hike the price. Octroi and value added tax could also result in price hike.

HCL has a strategic alliance with both Intel and AMD, the two leading manufacturers of microprocessors. The Chairman and Chief Executive officer of HCL, Mr.Arindham chowdhry is quite optimistic that the personal computer would be a boon for the consumers as the consumers would be in a position to choose between Intel and AMD.

HCL claimed that the benefits of a low cost personal computer would ultimately reach the common man. More people would have access to computers and could explore the wonders of internet. The personal computer has a 128MB RAM, 15 inch digital monitor, 1600MHz processor, 40GB hard disk 52x optical drive, keyboard, mouse and Linux OS.

Some of the largest companies in the world use Indian software to cater to their needs. India has a huge cell phone using population roughly around 64 million. It adds around 2.5 million users every month. But the use of personal computers is limited to a low 15 million. This low cost personal computer could very well herald a new era as more people would access to computers.
