'Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang' is a fun film
If you thought "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang" was a puerile film, think again. For it is the funniest film seen to date this year with lots of chintz and equally likeable banter.
Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer team up to deliver a praiseworthy performance. Thief-turned-actor Harry Lockhart (Robert Downey) is surprised to the core when he is cast as a detective in a movie screen test. Gay Perry (Kilmer) is a real life private eye who is now sourcing himself to Hollywood as a consultant. Gay Perry now has to train Lockhart for a detective's role. These two starkly different characters find themselves under the hammer when they have to solve a real Los Angeles murder. Harmony Faith Lane (Michelle Monaghan) who happens to be Lockhart's childhood crush is the duo's only other hope in this murder crisis.
Shane 'Lethal Weapon' Black has created this gem of a movie and must be rightly proud of the finished product. After churning out movies like The Last Action Hero, The Last Boy Scout and The Long Kiss Goodnight, Black had disappeared from the scene as he felt he needed to be away from the action genre. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang is his directorial debut and one can easily see that he has oodles of talent in this segment.
Robert Downey Jr. excels as the eccentric Lockhart and delivers hilarious one-liners with a deadpan expression and deserves all the plaudits that are bound to come his way. The casting even though a bit unconventional, for both the lead actors are well past their best days, redeems the film quite remarkably. Kilmer appears a misfit initially, but roars towards the end and it must be said that he looks and feels the part of a gay man to a nicety.
All in all, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang takes film noir out of the night and turns it into a candy, Los Angles style.
