Chesney brands Renee marriage as “sideshow”, says he'll be back

NEW YORK - Kenny Chesney, Renee Zellweger's soon to be ex-husband has spoken out for the first time since the Bridget Jones star filed for an annulment to their four-month marriage last week.

“I hit everything so hard this year. I had the biggest tour I've ever done, I had a record to finish that was real important to me, and, of course, I had something new in my personal life and I was trying to do that too. It really ended up being too much,” Country star Chesney told Country Weekly magazine. Chesney branded his failed marriage as a sideshow and promised fans that he would be back next year with the real thing -music. "I'm all right. I'm good. There have been better times, but I'll be okay," he assured fans.

Kenny Chesney and Renee Zellweger had had a surprise wedding in the Caribbean island of St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands four months ago. The couple first met in January this year at a charity concert for tsunami victims. After a whirlwind romance they had decided to tie the knot.

However, last week Renee Zellweger shocked many when she filed for annulment citing "fraud" in the legal papers. Later she clarified that the term "is simply legal language and not a reflection of Kenny's character." Zellweger who won the best supporting actress Oscar for Cold Mountain in 2004 was simply attempting some damage control.

For his part though, Chesney is just tired, "I'm tired right now, but by next year, I'll be excited to get back to it. And it'll be about the music again, not about the sideshow." Responding to Zellweger's request for privacy, Chesney issued a similar statement saying, "This is an incredibly sad time... I just hope everyone can respect the privacy that I know Renee has already asked for."

Under US law, an annulment is only granted if either party proves that the marriage occurred without consent or if one partner was caught lying about an existing spouse, permanent impotence or a criminal history.
