Green Day, Coldplay Rock At MTV Europe Awards
American Punk-rock trio Green Day and British rock band Coldplay stole the spotlight by taking home two prizes each, at the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) in Lisbon.
In a star-studded event at the Pavilaho Atlantico, Lisbon, Green Day collected two prizes one for the Best Rock Band and the other for the Best Album for 'American Idiot'. Coldplay led by Chris Martin on the other hand, picked up the Best U.K. & Ireland Act and the Best Song for 'Speed of Sound'.
The show hosted by British Comedian Sacha Baron Cohen began by a maiden live television rendition by Madonna of her single 'Hung Up' from her forthcoming album 'Confessions on a Dance Floor'. The Diva registered her comeback by emerging from a huge glitterball. “I have to take the time to say how much I loved Madonna's performance. She is an absolute legend and she makes us all look like amateurs,” said Robbie Williams, who won the award for the Best Male Artist.
The 'Free Your Mind' Award was given to the Irish Singer Bob Geldof in recognition of his campaign against poverty in Africa. “People must stop dying of poverty in Africa, they must stop doing that, and that is your job,” said Geldof.
Among those who performed at the event were Pussycat Dolls, Akon, The Black-Eyed Peas, Foo Fighters and System Of A Down.
The cartoon band Gorillaz took home the prize for the Best Group while Columbian singer Sakira bagged the award for the Best Female Artist. Gwen Stefani who was nominated in four categories failed to win a prize.
European and American fans selected the winners by voting on the MTV website. An estimated one billion viewers saw the show worldwide and for the first time the clippings were beamed to mobile phones.
