Amitabh Bachchan undergoes successful surgery, thanks everyone
MUMBAI, India - Indian film idol Amitabh Bachchan has undergone a successful surgery at Mumbai's Lilavati hospital for a condition called “diverticulitis of the small intestine.”
Bachchan arrived at the hospital yesterday fro the Escorts hospital in Delhi where he was admitted after complaining of severe abdominal pain. Doctors there ran a battery of tests and had tentatively diagnosed his condition as "colitis", the inflammation of the intestine.
However, after two CT scans in the Lilavati Hospital, it was confirmed that Bachchan had a lump in his stomach, which had become infected. The diverticula are small gaps in the intestine and are weak spots in this organ. Ideally, the preferred treatment would have been antibiotics and rest, but considering Bachchan's previous injuries that he sustained in 1982 on the sets of Coolie, doctors decided to go in for surgery.
The three-hour long surgery was successful and it is reported that Bachchan's vital stats are normal. He is still in intensive care and continues to be monitored closely. The 63-year-old megastar of Indian film industry is in the recovery room and is recuperating, his close friend and Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh told reporters. "Amitji should now cancel all his appointments and listen to the doctor. The world will not fall apart if he decreases his workload. He is certainly overworked," he said.
Throughout the surgery period and before that as well Bachchan was visited by a steady stream of big name visitors which included, Anil Ambani, Subrata Roy, Juhi Chawla, Ram Gopal Varma, Katrina Kaif and others. Later, Amar Singh told the media that Bachchan thanked everyone for the concern showered on him. He is expected to be in the ICU for another 3 days and could be advised rest for close to a month.
