Green Day, 50 Cent have field day at Billboard Awards

LAS VEGAS - Rapper 50 Cent and rock band Green Day were the stars at the Billboard Music awards held at the Las Vegas arena yesterday. Green Day and 50 Cent took home six awards each. The awards ceremony was hosted by rapper LL Cool J.

50 Cent was the most nominated artiste with 8 nominations and he swept away artist of the year and the album of the year (for "The Massacre,") awards, but was not present at the ceremony. Marian Carey was the next big artiste with five awards.

Among these three were for her hit album "We Belong Together." Green Day took away the Billboard 200 Album Group of the Year, Pop Group Of The Year and Rock Artist Of The Year. "American Idol" Carrie Underwood and Shakira were also big winners on the night, bagging a total of three trophies each.

Green Day opened the performances on the glitzy night with "Holiday," bandleader Billie Joe Armstrong also gave away the Century Award to Tom Petty. Speaking before giving away the trophy, Armstrong said, "I love music, I love rock and roll, therefore I love Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. If you're going to come up [on stage] and thank God, thank God for Tom Petty." Tom Petty was visibly moved when accepting the trophy, "We haven't always been boy scouts, but we never lost sight of the music. Let me remind you that this ain't the end. I can still kick some ass," he said.

Other performers on the night included Carrie Underwood, Toby Keith, Simpson with Pretty Ricky, Ciara, Daddy Yankee and Pharrell, Gwen Stefani with Slim Thug, and R. Kelly. Kanye West took away the Artist Achievement Award, "When I first came out I was a hot head, I thought I was the greatest," he said. "I still think I'm the greatest."
