Storm over Clarkson's songs dispute blows over
A day after Kelly Clarkson was criticized by the 'American Idol' judge Simon Cowell for not allowing participants in the TV talent contest being aired on the Fox TV to sing her songs, the storm blew over as Kelly Clarkson's spokesperson that there was no dispute over the song rights.
However, Sony BMG, Clarkson's record label, said negotiations are underway with the show over which of her songs can be used.
Earlier, Clarkson's management had barred her material from being used by the new competitors on the show.
However, the singer's spokesman Roger Widynowski said that the decision to not allow her songs to be licensed was for other purposes.
Simon Cowell was furious with Clarkson as he said: “No matter how talented Kelly Clarkson is, she would not be in the position she's in now without winning this show. It's the public who bothered to pick up the phone and vote for her. If she refuses to give songs to be used on the show, it's like saying to every person who voted for you, 'You know what? Thank you. I'm not interested in you anymore.”
Her spokesperson went on the defensive and said: “Kelly Clarkson was happy to hear her song, 'Since U Been Gone,' on 'American Idol' ... and as far as she's concerned there is no conflict between her and the TV show. She intended all along to license additional material to the show and will do so when asked and within reason.”
Clarkson, who is the first winner of American Idol launched in 2002, had topped pop charts with the single 'Since U Been Gone' and also earned a Grammy nomination for best pop vocal album with Breakaway.
Clarkson in an interview had also conceded that her career began with American Idol.
