Elliot Yamin bids emotional adieu to American Idol
NEW YORK - 27-year-old Elliot Yamin bid an emotional farewell to American Idol last night after he was eliminated following the closest margin in Idol's history. Yamin, who was picked by Paula Abdul as a likely winner, polled 33.06 percent of the 50 million votes cast, while favorite Taylor Hicks got 33.68 percent of the vote. The other Idol finalist Katherine McPhee polled 33.26 percent.
"The word close doesn't begin to describe the margin between each contestant," host Ryan Seacrest said. Yamin, who incidentally is around 90 percent deaf in his right year, was seen as an underdog in the competition after his behavior and general demeanor impressed audiences. When a segment of his recent visit back home to greet fans in Virginia was shown on Idol, Yamin broke down and so did Abdul.
Simon Cowell had sensed that Yamin was on his way out after his rendition of Ray Charles' "I Believe To My Soul" on Tuesday. "Your songs are not going to carry you through to next week that's the problem," Cowell had told Yamin. "However, you are a great guy. You are a great singer. And whatever happens, you will make your mom very proud for what you've achieved for this competition." But Paula Abdul was backing him and in a recent interview to Teen People magazine, Abdul had said she wanted Elliot to win, "I am going to be honest with you--I want Elliott to win."
However that was not to be and it will be Taylor Hicks and Katherine McPhee who will compete in the May 23-24 finals. Simon Cowell believes that Hicks has this won. On Monday's Tonight Show, Cowell told Jay Leno that he was sure that Taylor Hicks was going to be the next American Idol.

» I thought it was about Talent?
I thought this was suppose to be about talent and not popularity..it was very evident this season that this contest is rigged..in the two verses that Elliot Yamin sang with Burt Bacarach he clearly blew away the two final contestants..Elliot Yamin should have won this contest as he was the only one who had any talent this season..he has an incredibly beautiful soulful voice that can sing that that should be brought back and that which is yet to be written..Elliot Yamin should must get a recording contract with his talent...I would stand in line to buy any recording he puts out....I guarantee you it would be worth every cent!!! Elliot Yamin is a Great Singer!
