LONDON: Taking fish oil supplements during pregnancy may be a way of ensuring better brain development in babies, new research has suggested. A team of Australian researchers found 2 ½-year-old toddlers, born to mothers that consumed fish oil, had better hand-to-eye coordination and could recall more words and longer phrases.

The situation of elderly patients seems bleak with recent reports emphasizing how malnourished they are in hospitals. Statistics show that over 7,50,000 pensioners face severe under-nourishment and hence greater risks of diseases as well as complications during surgery. Their helplessness seems accelerated by the obvious hesitation of NHS to divert more funds for them.

The trans fats debate continues with Chicago contemplating going the New York City way in banning them from even restaurants, food-chains and all eat out joints. The potential ban follows strict orders from the Food and Drug administration regarding labeling all processed foods and canned foods for the quantity and kind of fat that they contain.

Statistics show that breast cancer rates fell to an all-time low in 2003, a drop by 7%, which interestingly coincided with reduced number of women taking hormone pills post menopause. The link, though doesn't prove for sure, does strongly suggest that hormone pills, particularly estrogen ones, do contribute to increased risks of breast cancer.
