X--Men: The Last Stand was supposed to have been a terrific swansong of the comic book trilogy that deals with super-powered mutants who battle among themselves and each other. However the film has a bit of a scrappy feel to it and instead of focusing on the emotions of the mutants, there appears to be a predilection towards histrionics.

NEW YORK - 27-year-old Elliot Yamin bid an emotional farewell to American Idol last night after he was eliminated following the closest margin in Idol's history. Yamin, who was picked by Paula Abdul as a likely winner, polled 33.06 percent of the 50 million votes cast, while favorite Taylor Hicks got 33.68 percent of the vote. The other Idol finalist Katherine McPhee polled 33.26 percent.

NEW YORK - Illusionist David Blaine's attempt to set a world record for holding his breath under water ended in a failure after divers rescued him. Blaine began struggling after seven minutes and divers went into the water-filled sphere to rescue him.

LONDON - Apple Computer has emerged the victor in the legal battle with the Beatles after Justice Edward Mann said he found no breach of trademark agreement. Apple Corps, which is the Beatles' main representative, had contended that Apple Computer was in breach of an agreement since it used the trademark logo to sell music.
